Increased Attack Speed will literally increase the speed of your attacks, thus increasing your Damage Per Second (DPS).
You can also increase your attack speed by equipping weapons that have a higher "Attacks Per Second".

As far as attack speed for channeling abilities think of it this way the % dmg done is based off of how much mana is spent, so if you have a slow attack rate you will deal less dmg with channeling but use less mana, where as high attack speed means faster consumption but alot more dmg per tick
mana used * % dmg = dmg done
attack speed * mana for spell =
mana usage rate
high mana usage rate means higher dpt(damage per tick(when the dmg pops up)
dont believe me buy 2 cheap attack speed only ring and 1 ammy, take off your current ammy and rings use channeling spell on a boss that wont die really fast, put them on and notice the higher dmg per tick
